Which mountain emoji should name my Epics?
When I title work items in Notion, I use a
\[__] pattern with specific emojis to signal type:- 📖 for user stories
- 📖📅 for time-boxed stories
- 🛠️ for atomic implementation tasks
- 🏗️ for projects
- ⬆️ for feature work / upgrades / updates
- Mountain emojis 🗻 ⛰ 🏔️ loosely for “big” things
I wanted to pick one mountain emoji as the canonical marker for Epics.
The constraint: alphanumeric order matters
In my system, the emoji that comes first alphanumerically should usually be the most important or most canonical. For the three mountain emojis, the Unicode order is:
- ⛰ (U+26F0)
- 🏔 (U+1F3D4)
- 🗻 (U+1F5FB)
So ⛰ comes first.
Mapping mountains to meanings
Given how I now use them:
- ⛰ = Epic
Canonical marker for Epics across my Notion work items. Not a generic “project.”
- 🏗️ = Project
Concrete projects that may contain multiple Epics, features, and tasks.
- 🗻 = Big topic / mountain of understanding
A large, often meta or infrastructural theme.
- 🏔 = Reserved / optional
Available later if I discover a distinct meaning, but not the default.
This lets ⛰ carry the primary signal for Epics while preserving 🏗️ for projects and 🗻 for very big, conceptual “mountains” of work or understanding.
The role of ⬆️
I also added a dedicated emoji for feature-type work:
- ⬆️ = Feature / upgrade / update
Sometimes a 📖 story grows into ⬆️ when it becomes a feature-level change.
The decision
Going forward, my default pattern for these work items is:
[⛰]= Epic
[🏗️]= Project
[⬆️]= Feature / upgrade / update
I only use one mountain emoji for Epics across all of Notion, and that is ⛰ (U+26F0), the alphabetically-first and most important mountain in this system.
That’s it. Thanks for reading.
Oh. One more thing…
Be easy on yourself.
Jobs are hard.
Business is hard.
Work is hard.
Life is hard.
